Computer Network System

Computer network refers to a group of computers that are combined to each other for the purpose of communication. Wide variety of characteristics defines networks. This further introduces you with different categories of Network.

Types of networks

Below is the list of most common types of computer networks

Personal area network

It is computer network that is used for communication among computer devices close to one person. Some of the devices that are used in a PAN are personal computers, telephones, scanners, fax machines, video game consoles and printers. Personal area network may involve wired and wireless connections between devices.

Local area network

It is a computer network that covers small physical area like a home, office, or small group of buildings such as school. Recent wired LANs are most likely to be Ethernet technology dependent. Although, new standards also offer ways to create a wired LAN using existing home wire.

Campus area network

It is a computer network that is made up of an interconnection of local area networks within a limited geographical area. This network is likely to connect variety of campus buildings including: academic departments, and the university library etc. This type of network is smaller than a wide area network but larger than local area network.

Campus area network facilitate students to access Internet and university resources. This network is able to connect two or more LANs but is confined to particular geographical area such as a college campus, industrial complex, etc.

Metropolitan area network

It is a network that connects two or more LANs or CANs together but does not extend beyond the boundaries of city or town.

Wide area network

This network spans wide area i.e. any network whose communication links cross metropolitan, regional, or national boundaries. The most common example of Wide area network is Internet. It covers relatively a broad geographical area and uses transmission facilities provided by common carriers.
