Digital-camera
The various types of digital cameras and their uses.
A digital camera is a camera that has the ability to take digital photos as well as videos by means of an image sensor on which the images are recorded. It is an improvement on the film-based cameras. The added new functions include capturing video and recording sounds in addition to taking photographs. The new millennium compact cameras are mostly digital by design.
There are many benefits associated with the use of the digital cameras. Some of the benefits include the ability to store many photos on a storing device like a memory card; the ability to capture videos along with the sounds; and the ability to view the recorded videos as well as the clicked photographs on the camera itself immediately after recording or clicking.
There are different types of digital cameras, including compact digital cameras, bridge cameras, digital single lens reflex cameras, electronic viewfinder, interchangeable lens cameras, digital range finders, line-scan camera systems, and integrated cameras.
The different types are discussed below.
- Compact digital cameras
- Bridge cameras
- Electronic viewfinder, interchangeable lens cameras
- Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras
- Digital range finder cameras
- Line-scan camera systems
- Integrated cameras
Compact digital cameras
This type of camera is physically small and, therefore, portable. It is also referred to as a point-and-shoot camera. The smallest of these cameras are only about 20mm thick and are also called “subcompacts” or “ultra-compacts”.
Bridge cameras
This type of camera, just like the name implies, is designed to fill the gap between smaller cameras, including camera phones, and high-end cameras, like DSLR cameras. These cameras are physically and ergonomically like the DSLR cameras, having certain features in common, and at the same time also share compact features such as small sensors and fixed lenses with the smaller cameras.
This type of camera combines the features of DSLR and compact cameras. The large sensors and interchangeable lenses found in the DSLR cameras are incorporated in this camera. Moreover, the live preview that is characteristic of compact cameras is also found in this type of digital camera, where electronic viewfinder or rear LCD is used.
This type of camera has a single lens, as in the film-based Single-Lens Reflex Cameras (SLRs). These cameras are named after their viewing components. The viewing system involves the reflection of light from a mirror that comes from the lens and passes through a separate optical viewfinder. The process of capturing an image requires the mirror to shift, to allow the light to fall on the image maker.
This is a camera device that measures the distance of an object, and the device is operated by the user. These cameras are used on film cameras. The distances on the digital cameras are measured automatically using acoustic or electronic techniques; however, they do not have a range field. The range finder cameras are sometimes referred to as simply Range Finder.
This type of camera consists of an image sensor chip that functions as a line scanner as well as a focusing mechanism. These cameras are used in the industries where they need to focus on constantly moving images. They differ from other types of video cameras as they have a single array of pixel sensors and not matrices, as found in the video cameras. The working principle in this type of camera includes the flow of data from the camera at a given frequency.
A line is scanned, the scanning stops, and then the process repeats. A computer processes the data coming from the line-scan camera, and creates one-dimensional line data and two-dimensional images. The two-dimensional image data is then processed by an image processor that is ready for use.
